If fashion and subculture aren’t terribly interesting to you...
...This probably isn’t going to be a very engaging OP. Also, keep in mind I’m speaking mostly for the American lolita fashion communities. Anyway, allow me to invite you into the fluffy little world known as lolita fashion.
Lolita fashion is an odd phenomenon from Japan gaining some niche popularity in other countries, including America. Anyone who has been to Tokyo or any given anime convention has probably seen a lolita or two whether or not they were aware of it. Lolita is a dramatic, Rococo-inspired, doll-like style marked by elegance, modesty, youthful elements and poofy-as-hell skirts.
The fashion is known by many as Gothic Lolita and Elegant Gothic Lolita (EGL), though Gothic Lolita now refers to a subgenre, which will be gone over in detail later.
As for its origins, many attribute it to branching off from the Visual Kei movement of the mid-1980s. I’d love to tell you that’s the whole story, but it is an interesting journey as to how we came to dress like Rococo-obsessed nerds.
